Tufted annual with slender fibrous roots. Stems erect or ascending, 3-20 cm, trigonous, c. 1 mm diam., covered to 1/3 from base with pubescent pale brown or stramineous sheaths. Leaves flat or drying slightly inrolled, 0,5-2 mm broad, pubescent or scabridulous towards apex. Inflorescence an unequally-rayed, usually spreading urnbel with many spikelets. Involucral bracts 4-5, leaf-like. Spikelets pedicellate or sessile, many-flowered, sharply angular and narrowly ovoid, 3-8 x1,5-1,7 mm. Glumes ovate-lanceolate, 1,5-2 x 0.7-1 mm, matt, brownish-grey or light reddish-brown, glabrous; keel green, mid-vein excurrent. Style 1-1,1 mm, villous in upper 1/3-1/2, base thickened, glabrous; stigmas 2, 0,4 mm. Nut obovoid, biconvex, 0,7-0,8 x 0,5-0,6 mm, longitudinally ribbed and transversely striate, pale-coloured. Fl. 7-9. Streams and river banks, on wet sand dunes, s.l.-1000 m.
S. Europe, widely distributed in tropical and warm temperate regions of Old World.
