Glaucous-pruinose perennial, with slender, ±horizontal, branched rhizome, sometimes with stolon-like shoots, nigrescent on drying. Stems few, ±slender, 30-75 cm, 0.75-1.6 mm diam., ascending, subterete, 4-striate, glabrous, rarely shortly hispidulous, ± branched, with few short vegetative branches at flowering time; lower internodes abbreviated, shorter than leaves to equalling them, upper quickly elongating to c. 9 cm. Leaves in whorls of 6-7, 15-30 x 0.5-1 mm, acicular to narrowly oblanceolate-linear, acute to cuspidate, with hyaline apex 0.2-0.5 mm; margins revolute to midrib, scabrid, with several rows of antrorse teeth. Inflorescence many-flowered, more often lax, ovoid, glabrous, with branches slightly patent, ± equal or lower sometimes elongated and corymbiform cymes. Bracts elliptic, acuminate, with antrorsely scabrid to smooth margins. Pedicels 0.75-1.5 mm, suberect to somewhat spreading. Corolla whitish, 2.5-3.75 mm diam., broadly campanulate, with lobes 2-3 x as long as tube, broadly triangular-ovate, ± shortly apiculate, finally spreading. Mericarps broadly obovoid, c. 1.5-1.75 mm, nigrescent, finely reticulate-rugulose, glabrous. Fl. 5-6. Quercus scrub, Pinus woods, neglected fields, 200-1350 m.
