Dwarf shrublet forming dense, moss-like cushion, with woody rootstock. Stems to 8 cm tall. Leaves narrowly linear or linear-spathulate, acute, plicate, adpressed-sericeous, 5-10 x 1-4 mm. Flowers terminal, usually solitary, sometimes in few-flowered congested cymes. Outer sepals 8-10 x 3 mm, spreadinghairy , oblong to ± oblanceolate, acuminate. Corolla white, rarely rose or yellow, c. 15-18 mm. Ovary hairy. Fl. 5-8. Open Pinus nigra woodland, Quercus coccifera macchie, steppe, screes, chalky and serpentine slopes, eroded hills, grazed fields, 200-2135 m.
Balkans. This species grows in both Medit. and Ir.-Tur. territory.
