Annual. Stems to 80 cm erect or ascending. Leaf sheaths softly and often densely hairy. Leaf blades to 20 cm x 3-5 mm, usually pubescent. Panicle 8-12 x 2-8 cm, lax, open but commonly quite stiffly erect, sometimes drooping later; panicle branches and pedicels often stout. Spikelets 15-25 x 6-10 mm, lanceolate or oblong, longer than pedicels, often densely hairy. Glumes lanceolate, lower 5-9 mm, upper 8-12 mm. Lemma 12-18 mm, oblanceolate, chartaceous with deep apical sinus; awn to 10 mm , robust, rough, flattened, spreading or recurved when ripe, sometimes basally twisted. Palea shorter than lemma. Anthers 1-1.5 mm. FI. 4-7. Waste places, field margins, dry slopes, open woodland, s.l.-1830 m.
