Erect perennial herbs with soft, short indumentum especially in the lower part, up to 80 cm. Basal leaves obovate to lanceolate, acute, petiolate; cauline leaves smaller and narrower. Inflorescence a wide, spreading panicle. Calyx ± tubular in flower, 15-21 mm, sparsely and shortly puberulous; clavate in fruit. Petals creamy or whitish, deeply bifid. Anthophore 7-11 mm. Capsule included in the calyx. Open places, often with Pinus nigra, 650-2400 m.
Mediterranean area, C. Europe, S. Russia, Crimea, Caucasia, Turkestan, N. Iran.
